Original Watercolor Paintings and Limited Edition Prints of the Greater Fingerlakes Region by Bill Mowson
I’ve been traveling around and painting the Finger Lakes area since 2002 and I still feel like the surface has barely been scratched. This area is just so serene and beautiful that it is hard to express, but I keep trying. Each lake is subtly different from the others and if you look carefully, you will see that my color palette often varies accordingly with the lake.
My limited edition signed reproductions are available for purchase at Handwork and are done with a Glicee process, which is inkjet with archival inks on watercolor paper. The longevity of these reproductions with the inks and papers I use has been tested to 70 years before any noticeable fading occurs.

Spring Docks: The winter had been so long and hard that the warm breezes and light of spring were most welcome. A clear sign of the impending summer was the boats receiving their rigging for the sailing season. The crystal clear reflections of the water are highlighted with the interplay of violet and light blue in both the sky and lake. This painting is from Remington Point, one of my favorite spots on Cayuga Lake, looking south.

Lucifer Below: Lucifer Falls lives in Treman State Park just south of Ithaca. The hiking trail follows the gorge next to the river's vertical journey of several hundred feet. The falls is divided into 3 or 4 sections which are quite impossible to view in their entirety from the hiking paths. The summer is lush and cool in this gorge.

Spirit of Cayuga: Twilight can be a magical time on the lake. Here is a view of Cayuga Lake Inlet looking north from the Buffalo Street bridge in Ithaca. The muted colors of the early spring land contrast nicely with the glow of the sky just after sunset.

Cayuga Equinox: This painting captures Cayuga on the spring equinox just before sunset. Winter has not really left the region but the promise of warmer weather now exists. The surrealistic sky was a challenge to paint and the green of the lake is a common color at this time of year due to sediment from the early spring run off.

Treman's Fall: As the trees gain their autumn colors the boats begin to disappear from Treman Marine Park on Cayuga Lake. I enjoy attempting to capture the changeling hillsides as backdrops to the autumn lakes and boats of the region.

Spring Morning Swing: Stewart Park on the north side of Ithaca has rows of old willows lining the shoreline of southern Cayuga Lake. The morning sun is illuminating the top of the trees and casting long shadows as the pink of the morning sunrise gives way the blue skies of a tranquil spring morning. The swing is icing on the artist cake

Autumn Haze: There is something about the way that the contrast and color of distant objects fade when it is hazy. I have explored this effect along with some autumn foliage from above the shores of Cayuga Lake.

Early Winter Lake: A dusting of snow has recently come our way above Cayuga Lake in December. The oaks still hold many of their leaves and the air is crisp and dry. This northern view of the lake can be seen from Teeter Road just west of the Waterview Heights intersection.
