I have been a Handwork member for over 20 years, and I have explored many different crafts. Woodworking, sewing, spinning, dying, weaving, hooking and braiding rugs, many types of basketry (coiling, twining, weaving), quilting, ceramics, anything that can be done by hand with minimal equipment seems to interest me.
For as long as I can remember I have made objects---when I was young, they were ephemeral. Permanence came with the discovery of needles, thread, fabric, wood, hammer, and nails.
College graduation found me painting with watercolors and selling my work in local shows, but the acquisition of an old house forced me to put down my paint brush and return to fiber and nails. Weaving for more than 40 years, I am still fascinated with the process. The possibilities for combining different colors, patterns, and materials never ends. Exploring those options fills the shelves at Handwork with one-of-a-kind scarves, rugs, and occasionally metal baskets, wood and metal sculpture.
I will always make art. It is part of who I am and how I respond to what is happening in the world. Physically and spiritually, I am wound about and woven into the living processes of the earth. Making art is how I examine my relationship to nature, to the earth and to others.
