Two Foxes Studio
Two Foxes Studio is a boutique millinery studio created by Kimberly Hutsal, located in the Finger Lakes region of upstate NY.
Millinery is the art of hat making. Wooden blocks in various shapes and sizes are used to form softened felt or straw ‘bodies’ into hats. The wood blocks are both vintage and newly made shapes, giving Kimberly a wide range of styles to work with. Any style hat is possible with a collection such as this, from fedoras to bowlers, Derby hats to sun hats, ball caps to party hats. Kimberly also works with leather, weaving strips into driving caps, and making leather peaks and brims for her caps and hats. The hats are sewn on a vintage iron chain stitch machine and trimmed by hand. To get a specific color, ombré or weathered look, the materials are hand-dyed using various processes and techniques. The hats are then trimmed using millinery grosgrain ribbon, leather, feathers and/ or veiling. Sometimes the dye work is so interesting and unique that the hat is left untrimmed so as to not disrupt the flow of colors. In any case, the finished hat is a unique and high quality item that will last for years.
Kimberly received a degree in Fine Arts in Craft with an emphasis in fiber art from the Oregon College of Art & Craft in Portland, OR. Afterwards she found herself traveling and helping other artists around the country, from building and running a paper making studio in a letterpress business to sewing a series of Math Art quilts. Eventually, she landed in NYC and started working with an East Village milliner who taught her the art of blocking hats.
