As a self-taught artist, I have enjoyed experimenting with a variety of techniques to create 3-dimensional miniature worlds. I believe in the power of personal story-telling and use this as a focal point for my work.
Many of the stories depicted in my books are rooted in simple moments where I have been moved, transformed, or have observed the beauty and resilience of the people around me. Musical performance, yoga and movement, meditation, labyrinth walking, and quiet reading rooms are examples of subject matter that I have chosen to reveal such stories. Through folded and carved out pages of upcycled books, I create environments in which these stories can live. I’m deeply inspired by nature and the sense of curiosity and mystery it brings forth, so I often incorporate elements of the living world into my art. During my walks in the woods, I’m always on the lookout for interesting mosses, lichen, stones, and tree bark to weave into my book assemblages.
I began my book art as a way to honor my own treasured ancestral stories. Using vintage
photographs of my relatives, I’ve been able to build a visual representation of memories and preserve them within the pages of my book sculptures. Through commissioned customized book sculptures, I’ve had the great pleasure of meeting with clients, listening to their own cherished stories, and creating a piece through which their special memory can live on. I obtain all my books from the local Friends of the Library Book Sale. I like to think that I’m giving a book, that might otherwise be thrown away, a second life and a new story.
